I needed a new cordless drill. My worn-out drill was an 18v NiCad DeWalt hammer/drill. When I use the drill it's always wide open, because I need all the power I can get for some of the larger bits I use... 1" augers, 1 1/2 forstners, 3-4 inch hole saws. I've even used a 12 inch flycutter for mounting speakers. All with the 18v DeWalt. So, it was getting tired and was telling me it needed to be replaced. I have quite a number of DeWalt 18 volt tools and believe that DeWalt has the widest selection of compatible 18 volt accessories, so I wanted to stay in the DeWalt line, if possible. But, I did not want another NiCad machine. So, when I found out that DeWalt's new XRP lithium batteries also fit the old drills and accessories, and that the old NiCad batteries (I still had a few left) also fit the new drills, I knew it was time to buy. I got the most powerful 18v hammer/drill DeWalt has, and was not disappointed.
A well known builders-supply chain store had the same drill for $329.00 plus 9.75% tax, totaling $361.08 out the door. I also looked online and saw that Amazon had the same drill in a combo kit with the impact driver for $399.00, no tax, and free shipping. So, for just $38.00 more I could also get the impact driver? Man, I couldn't punch the keyboard fast enough. Even with regular ground shipping, it was here on my doorstep in less than a week. I mean, was that a no-brainer or what? It even included a tool bag.
Like I said, I really needed to replace my old drill, but did I REALLY need the impact driver, even with such a good deal? For a quite a while, my construction friends have been telling me I needed to stop installing screws with the drill. "You'll save time and money," they said. I had been dragging my feet because I didn't want to spend a couple of hundred or more dollars to get an impact driver. So, after stripping out the millionth screw head and beating up just as many phillips bits, I relented and was finally in the mood to upgrade to an impact driver. And wow, am I glad I did! No chewed up heads or bits... the screw just goes in nice and clean. In the combo kit the extra price of the impact driver is really minimized. Overall, I see it as a lot of time and money saved. If you are in a similar predicament, I recommend you get the combo kit. Like me, you'll never look back.
